The glorious open space of Farthing Downs is in Coulsdon in the Borough of Croydon. The Downs was a long strip of grassland, with pockets of ancient woodland, which was used for racing in the mid-1700s. The Racing Calendar of 1754 reported a meeting taking place on Farthing Downs on Monday 8th April 1754 when the feature race was won by Giggey owned by Mr Rogers.
